Bulgarian-born Maya Nova is a Jazz vocalist, songwriter and educator, whose

25-year career has taken her around Europe, Asia and North America.

 

After earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree at the National Music Academy, the most authoritative establishment in Bulgaria, she pursued a career in the performing arts on the music stage with several leading Jazz and Funk groups. Appearances at the Sofia Jazz Fall Festival with the Maya Nova Jazz Quartet and on the popular TV program “Todor Kolev's Night Show” with the National Music Academy Big Band followed as well as performances with the Bulgarian National Radio Big Band.

 

In 1998, Nova was invited to expand her reach internationally: Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, Cyprus and in 2002 to Singapore, from which she would be based subsequently.

On the vibrant island, she established herself as one of the most sought-after Jazz vocalists, performing at concerts, festivals and events at the Esplanade Theaters of The Bay, Chjimes, the South Bridge Jazz Club, the SingJazz Club, the Marina Bay Sands, Resort World and Sentosa Island Resort, etc.  She has also been invited and featured throughout Asia - in Malaysia, India, China, South Korea and Vietnam.

 

From 2008 until her relocation to New York City in 2012, Nova was also on the faculty of the LaSalle College of The Arts as an adjunct voice lecturer.

In 2009, Nova was a semi-finalist of the famed Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition at the 43rd Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. 

 

2010 saw the release of her debut album "Open" with a concert at the “Late Nite Show” series at the Esplanade Recital Hall, in Singapore.

 

In 2011, she was featured with the Maya Nova Jazz Quartet at the Bansko International Jazz Festival (Bulgaria) and Nišville Jazz Festival (Serbia) alongside renowned saxophonist Rick Margitza.

In 2012 Nova embarked on pursuing a Master Degree at the Jazz Vocal Performance Program at Queens College, New York, which she completed in 2014. 

 

Since 2013 Nova has also led her NY Quartet featuring John Di Martino (p), Peter Slavov (b), Alexandre Kautz (d), performing at famed NY Jazz venues Zinc Bar, Jazz at Kitano, the WhyNot Jazz Room, Zeb’s, Café Vivaldi, Chez Lucienne, Somethin’ Jazz Club, the Flatiron Room etc.

 

Her second album entitled “Days” featuring her original compositions and co-produced with Di Martino was recorded in New York and released digitally in July 2015, and was followed by live concert presentations in Singapore, New York, Bulgaria and Vietnam.

In 2019, Maya Nova graduated with Doctor of Musical Arts degree in jazz studies from Stony Brook University, New York, USA.

In the span of 25 years of a performing career in Europe, Asia and North America, Maya Nova has collaborated or appeared on the stage with artists as: Rick Margitza, Ray Anderson, Jeremy Monteiro, Christy Smith, John Di Martino, Peter Slavov, Ed Howard, Sean Fitzpatrick, Nitzan Gavrieli, Ronen Itzik, Darell Smith, Alon Nechushtan, Joseph Lepore, Benito Gonzales, Eric Wyatt, Rick Smith, Aya Sekine, Alina Ramirez, Andrew Lim, Louis Soliano, Wei Tan, Ventzi Blagoev, Petar Momchev, Lyubo Tzanev, Dimitar Karamfilov, Stefan Goranov, etc.

Today, Dr. Nova resides in Singapore, while continuing to tour the three continents as a performer, teacher, and songwriter.
